Hula Hoop Your Way to Results
15 03 2008I pinch myself every day because the moment my feet touch the ground, I know that I will have a chance to do work that I love. Recently I was invited by a client to conduct a session on how their team of 35 high-achieving men and women could release their brilliance even more.
Prior to my presentation, I had a chance to listen to the Vice President, Matt Hodson, share his vision for the year. He then introduced Quincy Stephens, a veteran of the company and the newly appointed manager for the team. I was blown away when Quincy put on a construction hat, a construction vest and a tool belt and introduced his vision to the team…Renovate in 2008! He then proceeded to share his three big ideas for achieving the Vice President’s vision:
1. Get It Done – no excuses, no complaints, no finger pointing at the economy or anything else.
2. All In – everyone is in this together and needs to support one another no matter what the task might be.
3. Have Fun Doing It – he started swaying his hips in a circle, pretending he had an imaginary hula hoop around his waist, and said, “Ladies and gentlemen, no matter what is happening, we are going to laugh, have fun and hula hoop our way to results
Well, needless to say, I was sold and ready to sign up, and so was everyone else in the room! The team was abuzz because he had captured their imagination. Here was a leader who was willing to risk a little to get people to buy into his plan.
What if you added a little fun to work? Go to Kmart and buy a hula hoop. Loosen up your ultra conservative environment. People spend more time at work than they do at home. Work should be fun.
