The Cost of Brilliance

16 01 2008

I was recently sharing with the sales team of GSK GlaxoSmithKline how to release brilliance. As I walked through the four steps of brilliance which are the four “C’s” of the diamond, a young lady blurted out and said “You forgot the fifth C.” I looked at her a little jarred because I was supposed to be the one with all of the answers. I took a deep breath and said “So what is the fifth C?” She said “cost!” Everyone chimed in with her, nodding their heads, that’s right… cost.

This caused me to reflect and it dawned on me that in life anything worth having is going to cost you something. The question is how much are you willing to pay? According to dictionary.com there are 12 definitions for the word cost. The one that I like the most defines cost as “the price paid to acquire, produce, accomplish or maintain anything.”

The 2004 presidential and congressional elections cost a record $3.9 billion, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. It is projected that the 2008 presidential election by itself will cost over $3 billion dollars. The point is, someone has to make a sacrifice and give up what is comfortable and convenient to acquire what is desired.

What is it going to cost you to be brilliant? Old habits, ways of thinking, toxic relationships, language that hinders instead of helps, fear of success, fear of the unknown. Some would say, “You know, I am going to stay right where I am. Why pay anything to be brilliant?” Well, that’s fine. If you are o.k., then I am o.k. Why change? It’s better to play it safe. Right? Perhaps for you, but not for the individuals that say, “I am ready to step up and Be Brilliant!”

In life nothing is free. Everything costs something and many times the price will increase when you least expect. Nevertheless, I believe the greater the price the greater the outcome. Here’s the deal: you have to decide how much you can afford – in time and energy – then make an investment in the “Future You.” You will be so glad that you did.
