Jamaica… A Brilliant Shift from the Norm!
11 01 2008It’s 3:30 AM and I have just been liberated from the shackles of conformity. This past week I was the guest of Glaxo-Smith Kline Pharmaceutical in the Caribbean region. While in Kingston, Jamaica I spent time with the President and CEO of Sagicor Jamaica Ltd. (formerly Life of Jamaica) and his entire organization for an entire day. I came to share with them how to Release Organizational Brilliance and instead they released something in me. I now understand the power of head, heart, and hands.
There was a spontaneous energy to “just be.” There was no need to put on an air or try to impress because everyone just seemed to go with the flow. However, there was a hunger for knowledge and wisdom like I have never witnessed before in my travels. Every person I met, every restaurant I ate in or public place I visited, there was a spirit of possibility despite poverty and crime. I saw people grasping for hope, an opportunity, and a chance to create a new reality.
The business professionals that I met on this trip – which took me to Trinidad, Barbados, St. Maarten, and Jamaica – were some of the sharpest, most intelligent, and quick-witted individuals I have ever met in this region. There was an earthy-ness to the way they approached everything. Then it hit me… everything that they did there was a synergistic union between head, heart, and hands.
In one instant, I understood why they love to dance, sing, and rock to the reggae and the soca beat at the drop of a hat. The head, heart, and hands are one. Have you ever met someone whose head was in the meeting or activity but their heart wasn’t? They were going through the motions. What about the person whose heart was in the right place but their head was a box of rocks? Furthermore, what about the people who use their hands to accomplish a task but their mind and their heart is MIA (missing in action)?
Back in the Caribbean, Carnival is around the corner and everyone was already getting in the mood. Every person I saw operated with the mindset that today is going to count. Tomorrow is not promised. Let’s velcro ourselves to the day at hand and make the most of it. WOW… what incredible liberation, freedom of spirit, and daring disposition. This was a brilliant shift from the norm.
What about you? Are your head, heart, and hands fully immersed in what you are doing? If yes, congratulations. If not, then why not? Make today, this moment, this second… count!

There was this guy see.
He wasn’t very bright and he reached his adult life without ever having learned “the facts”.
Somehow, it gets to be his wedding day.
While he is walking down the isle, his father tugs his sleeve and says,
“Son, when you get to the hotel room…Call me”
Hours later he gets to the hotel room with his beautiful blushing bride and he calls his father,
“Dad, we are the hotel, what do I do?”
“O.K. Son, listen up, take off your clothes and get in the bed, then she should take off her clothes and get in the bed, if not help her. Then either way, ah, call me”
A few moments later…
“Dad we took off our clothes and we are in the bed, what do I do?”
O.K. Son, listen up. Move real close to her and she should move real close to you, and then… Ah, call me.”
A few moments later…
“DAD! WE TOOK OFF OUR CLOTHES, GOT IN THE BED AND MOVED REAL CLOSE, WHAT DO I DO???”
“O.K. Son, Listen up, this is the most important part. Stick the long part of your body into the place where she goes to the bathroom.”
A few moments later…
“Dad, I’ve got my foot in the toilet, what do I do?”
